Currently, most of the sports tournaments in Vietnam, including professional and amateur football tournaments, have been postponed due to the complicated situation of COVID-19. Some amateur football tournaments have still been organized in order to prepare for the national teams at sports tournaments in 2022, especially SEA Games 31 (expected to take place in May, 2022). In order to ensure the success of the tournaments and health and safety for the participants amid COVID-19 outbreak, Vietnam Football Federation requires the organization committees and localities hosting the tournaments to strictly implement the regulations on the pandemic prevention and control.

This year’s Thanh Nien Newspaper National U-21 Championship is joined by 18 teams being divided into three groups. The group stage takes place from December 2 to 12. The teams will compete in a single round robin format to decide six first and second placed teams of the groups, one third placed team with the best result in the group stage and the host team of the final round to progress to the finals (scheduled to take place from December 16 to 25). Reportedly, all the teams are advised to arrive in Hanoi and Hung Yen Province (two hosts of group stage and final stage) seven days before the kick-off date to ensure the implementation of all health guidelines.
According to the draw, Khanh Hoa U-21 are grouped into Group A with Hanoi, Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Dong A Thanh Hoa, Gia Dinh and Dong Nai. Khanh Hoa U-21 can hope for a spot in the final stage if they have good results against Hanoi and Hoang Anh Gia Lai in the first two matches of the group stage. In the final stage in the 2020 tournament, Khanh Hoa U-21 had one win, one loss, and one draw and couldn’t advance to the semi-final. Reportedly, in order to prepare for the 2021 tournament, the team plans to travel to Hanoi at the end of November.
