There will be various activities in response to the 56th anniversary of the Vietnam Population Day (December 26, 1961-2017), says Phan Van Giap, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Branch for Population & Family Planning.


Khanh Hoa Branch for Population & Family Planning will organize meetings to review population & family planning tasks and propaganda campaigns; provide reproductive health services to disadvantaged communities; in cooperation with Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly hold knowledge exchange programs on population, development and elder care; the elderly with population & family planning tasks; replaced and repaired damaged posters and banners in main streets; in cooperation with mass medical agencies make reportages and columns themed Vietnam Population Day and National Action Day on Population; in cooperation with the Community Reproductive Heath Care Center (Blue Star project), Van Ninh District Medical Center integrate population & family planning propaganda into the provision of reproductive health services, mother and child health care in coastal areas.


Population and Family Planning Centers of districts and towns will provide local authorities, the Steering Committee for Population & Family Planning consultancy on organizing meetings to respond to Vietnam Population Day and National Action Month on population; replace or repair damaged panels, banners, propaganda slogans; promote communication activities themed Vietnam Population Day; organize mass communication, group counseling in residential areas; provide reproductive health and family planning services; premarital counseling and health care; prenatal and neonatal screening, etc.


Over the past years, together with raising public awareness of the meanings of screening for early diagnosis of prenatal and neonatal diseases, the branch has cooperated with the Screening Center, Tu Du Hospital, BIONET Vietnam Company and medical institutions in Khanh Hoa to provide free prenatal and neonatal screening services for social welfare beneficiaries. Since 2011, prenatal and neonatal screening has been provided for 41,339 cases, 442 cases of which have been detected with defects and 652 have been transferred to Tu Du Hospital. The branch has cooperated with relevant units to conduct neonatal screening, take blood examples to detect G6PD and congenital hypothyroidism. 8,941 babies have been screened and 101 have been detected with G6PD and one with congenital hypothyroidism.


In 2018, Khanh Hoa Branch for Population & Family Planning will continue its prenatal and neonatal screening services, including providing prenatal and neonatal screening technique training for service providers; applying screening techniques at qualified institutions; supervising and providing screening technique support.


District-level affiliations will provide advocacy, education, counseling on prenatal and neonatal screening; apply ultrasound techniques, do prenatal screening tests to detect abnormal fetal risks; take and send blood samples to screening centers; supervise and provide technical assistance for commune-level affiliations. Commune-level affiliations will hold propaganda activities, provide advocacy, education and counseling on the benefits of prenatal and neonatal screening in the community; detect and make referral recommendation for high-risk pregnancy; take and send blood samples to screening centers; monitor and manage high-risk women, newly-born diagnosed with diseases and other cases as designated by tertiary-level hospitals; etc. Khanh Hoa Branch for Population & Family Planning strives to fulfill the 2018 target of pre-natal screening for 7,740 pregnant women (accounting for 45% of pregnant women); neonatal screening for 6,480 newborns (35% of live births in the year).
