To awake valuable farming areas in Khanh Hoa

The project of Song Cho 1 water reservoir in Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa Province with the biggest capacity in the province is expected to awake valuable farming areas.

The project of Song Cho 1 water reservoir in Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa Province with the biggest capacity in the province is expected to awake valuable farming areas.

The whole Khanh Hoa Province has over 30 water reservoirs with total capacity of 250 million m3 of water. These irrigational works supply enough water for 20,000 hectares while the area of agricultural production of the province is about 100,000 hectares. Therefore, building more irrigaional works is a solution to water lack.

After fact-finding survey, in April, 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has ratified the policy to invest in the project of Song Cho 1 water reservoir. The project has 2 parts. The water reservoir will be invested VND950 billion by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development from the government bond. The water reservoir will be set up on the upstream of Cho river in Khanh Binh Commune, Khanh Vinh District. The work will be built from 2017 to 2021 to be the biggest water reservoir with capacity of 108 million m3.

Simultaneously, the People’s Committee of Khanh Hoa Province will carry out a work with dams, channels and lines to lead water to three communes of Khanh Binh, Khanh Hiep and Khanh Dong. The province will also invest a branch from Song Cho 1 water reservoir to some communes in Ninh Hoa Township, namely Ninh Sim, Ninh Xuan, Ninh Tan and Ninh Hung. Total investment for the work by Khanh Hoa Province is estimated to be VND548 billion.

The two works will be combined and is expected to supply water for 2,500 hectares of farming land in the three communes in Khanh Vinh and take water to the Cai river valley in Ninh Hoa Township. Song Cho 1 water reservoir will also supply 110,000 m3/day for life and industry.

With such large scale, Song Cho water reservoir is not only for watering rice. In a recent meeting related to this project, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee confirmed, “This is a project with large scale and big investment. The consultant have to orient the water supply aiming to highly valuable crops, especially fruit plants.”

According to Khanh Vinh District People’s Committee, two communes Khanh Dong and Khanh Hiepk has changed into growing fruit plants, especially green-skin grapefruits, for 5 years. Khanh Binh Commune is also developing breeding and fruit planting. The planted areas are watered mostly by bored wells, which cost farmers a lot and doesn’t supply enough water for them. Therefore, beside 340 hectares of rice, the rest of 2,500 hectares to get water from Song Cho water reservoir is grown with fruit plants and secondary crops.

The branch to bring water for 4 communes in Ninh Hoa will water the sugarcane growing areas of the province. The water here isn’t enough now.
