Good fruits in Song Cau

Song Cau Commune (in Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa Province) has been oriented to develop two kinds of plants, those are durians and green-skin grapefruits to help local people to raise income as well as partly carry out targets in building new rural areas.

Song Cau Commune has total agricultural land of 450 hectares. Previously, sugarcane was grown on about 344 hectares. In recent years, the farmers in the commune have changed into growing green-skin grapefruits and durians. They have become two main crops of Khanh Vinh District, followed by jackfruits and Australian mangoes.
 

From first durian trees of the war veteran Nguyen Hong Son, up to now, Song Cau Commune has 23 hectares of durian trees, 70% of which can be harvested and the rest are growing. Durian trees are suitable with soil and climate of Song Cau. This year, price of durians purchased at gardens is VND60,000/kg.

Beside durians, in three recent years, green-skin grapefruit trees have grown well in the commune. It’s a valuable kind of plants with price of VND50,000/kg for the the first grade and VND30,000/kg for the second grade. According to Nguyen Ngoc Hoa, Acting chairman of the commune’s People’s Committee, till September 2017, the commune had more than 45 hectares of green-skin grapefruits. The local farmers also have registered to grow more 13 hectares under the district’s project in main plants and Decision 661 by the provincial People’s Committee on supporting agriculture and rural service development in the province for the period of 2017 – 2020. With 1 hectares and more, the raisers will be given an aid of VND10 million to invest in watering system, saplings, planting techniques, etc. Local farmers have also changed some areas of sugarcane growing by rivers ans streams into growing green-skin grapefruits.

At present, Song Cau Commune has achived 13 out of 19 norms to build new rural areas. To reach all norms in 2019, Song Cau Commune need focus on the six rest norms. About the income norm, the average income in 2016 was only VND24 million/person/year. The target in 2019 was VND37 million.

Song Cau Commune has three hamlets with 359 households, including more than 20 ethnic minority households. In the whole province, there are 7 poor households, including 7 ethnic minority ones.

Especially, in Song Cau Commune, 7 poor households of ethnic minority people are helped by  officials of the commune. The official frequently pay visits to their houses to guide them about production and discover their difficulties in time to help them.

Song Cau Commune is making efforts to build new rural areas to reach targets in 2019 with the aim to change the appearance of the commune and improve living of the locals.
