Many farms in Ninh Son Commune (Ninh Hoa Township, Khanh Hoa Province) have developed effectively, which has created jobs and raised income for rural people.

Nguyen Dinh Quang’s household in Hamlet 1 is a symbol in successful farming in Ninh Son Commune. Quang and his brothers have set up a big farm on poor soil. Up to now, the farm earns them about VND1.2 billion/year. Quang shared, “Natural conditions of Ninh Son are unfavorable to farming as most of the commune is half-mountain half-plain areas and it is deprived of water. We grew acacia trees. When beginning reclaiming this soil, we met a lot of difficulties. To solve lack in water, we dug ponds to raise fish and grow lotus to reserve water. When our sale went stable, we grew sugarcane more. Our area of sugarcane now has been expanded to nearly 60 hectares. Each year, we hire 40 – 50 labors for farming.”

Quang’s family also bought more land to grow pumpkins, red pepper, raise chicken, and buy plough, bulldozer and truck to serve their farming and let them out to others. He has also raised a herd of cows for 3 years. Up to now, his herd of cows totals 30 – 40.

Luong Thi Thu Cuc in Hamlet 3 is a farmer overcoming difficulties to make rich in Ninh Son. Now she has an orchard with 700 grapefruit trees, 200 mango ones and 100 jackfruit ones. The orchard now has earned her a stable monthly income. As expected, it will bring her about VND500 million/year. She shared, “When our family came to Ninh Son to reclaim, our land was impoverished. We led water from a spring on a mountain to our land and made water reservoir to water trees.”

According to Tran Van Quoi, chairman of Ninh Son Commune Farmers’ Association, over 10 households in Ninh Son have been successful in farming like Quang and Cuc. Many other households also try farming despite the poor soil. At present, four main models in Ninh Son are breeding, sugarcane planting, fruit planting and garlic planting. “Beside developing economy of the households, such big farms have created many jobs for local laborers. It also has partly raised income for the rural people”, Quoi said.
