Although only starting to create artistic photographs at the age of 43, in 2012, Khanh Hoa’s photographic artist Bui Mai Thien has gained a lot of awards at the international photography contests.

Bui Mai Thien was born in Cam Ranh in 1969. He went to Nha Trang to learn photography at a wedding photo studio after high school graduation, and then opened his own wedding photo studio in Cam Ranh. He kept doing this job until 2012 when he started the career as a photographic artist.

Since then, he has often taken ten trips each year throughout Vietnam to capture the beauty of nature. In 2014, he took part in the Artistic Photograph Exhibition of the South Central and Highlands (Vietnam) for the first time and had four photos selected to display. Also in 2014, Thien was presented three awards at the international photo contests. His photo “Lights on the river” was given silver prize in Bangladesh and bronze prize in India; “Salt crop” photo won silver in Cyprus.

Thien won more international awards in 2015. For example, he was given gold medal at the Three Country Grand Circuit 2015 (Ireland - Montenegro – Serbia), gold FIAP in Serbia, gold SALON medal in Žagubica (Serbia) with “Terraces in Mu Cang Chai 9”; gold DPA medal in Croatia, gold FIAP medal in the Czech Republic with “Crossing the River 5”; gold medal in Sri Lanka with “Lights on the River”; gold DPA medal at Cattaro GP Circuit 2015 with “New day at sea”; gold PSA medal in Bosnia & Herzegovina with “Traditional Job”; two gold medals in Greece with “New day 5”, and so on.

With many awards achieving in 2015, Bui Mai Thien has been the photographer who has won the most awards in one year in Khanh Hoa. At the 2nd Danube Digital Circuit 2017 in Bulgaria, he was offered silver SALON medal with photo “Son Tra Cave”.

From 2014 until now, Thien achieved 14 gold medals, 11 silver medals, four bronzes medals, two jury awards, and 55 certificates of honor at the international photo exhibitions and contests. “My goal is achieving national awards. To the artistic photographers in Vietnam, it is more difficult to win a national award than winning a FIAP gold medal,” said Thien.

The objects in the photographs of Thien are not the new ones; however, they often evoke emotion and leave a deep impression on the viewers. Thien said that he likes to capture the moments when people and nature blend in harmony.

Bui Mai Thien plans to hold an exhibition in 2020 in order to mark the 30th year of his career as a photographer. Hopefully, he will gain more achievements and achieve his goals.
