As reported by Hien, Nguyen Le Yen Lanh (born in 1998), Hien’s sole daughter, used to be a healthy person until July 2016. At that time, Lanh’s right eyeball protrudes forward in the eye socket. Hien had to borrow VND15 million from many people in order to bring her daughter to Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital for medical examination. Lanh was diagnosed with Basedow's disease which causes exophthalmos (protruding eyeball). After that, because of her illness got more severe, Lanh was transferred to Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital where the doctors said that she have to have timely surgery. However, because Lanh’s family could not afford the surgery cost, Lanh was brought home from the hospital.

In September, another misfortune came to their family. Nguyen Van Loc (born in 1963), Hien’s husband, suffered a brain hemorrhage. Loc did not has medical insurance; therefore, the medication costs and hospital fees were up to VND20 million. In order to pay the treatment costs for her husband, Hien had to borrow money with monthly interest of VND1 million. So far the debt is VND50 million. Unfortunately, the illness Loc and Lanh has not got better.

Reportedly, before suffering illness, Loc was a mason with monthly income of around VND2 million. Hien used to work as a maid for a private company, earning more than VND3 million per month. Since her husband and daughter have taken ill, Hien left her job to look after them.

Lanh passed the entrance exam to Nha Trang Tourism College but she could not keep studying due to her illness and lack of money. Lanh hopes to be cured of the disease so that she can continue her studying.
Hien’s family was proposed to be recognized as a poor household of Dien Phuoc Commune.
