Nguyen Thien Phuoc (Hamlet 1, Xuan Tay Village, Dien Xuan Commune, Dien Khanh District, Khanh Hoa Province) was born in 2011 with many diseases. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, his mother, had to earn a living for the whole family; looked after Phuoc and his decrepit old grandmother.

According to Tram, at birth, Phuoc was diagnosed with many diseases: esophageal stricture, gastric perforation, mitral valve prolapse, newborn external genital malformation. He was then transferred to Children’s Hospital 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Because Phuoc was just a newborn baby at that time, the doctors could only perform surgery to treat esophageal stricture and gastric perforation. Unfortunately, at the age of 3, Phuoc was found to have thalassemia which causes fatigue, growth failure, shortness of breath and yellow skin (jaundice).

Reportedly, Tram and her husband made their living by farming and had an uncertain income. After Phuoc was born and diagnosed with many diseases, Phuoc’s father left home. Their situation becomes desperate with all the burdens have fallen on the shoulder of Phuoc’s mother.

Up till now, the sum of money which Tram borrowed to pay Phuoc’s treatment cost has been up to nearly VND100 million. They don’t have any valuable assets to sell for money apart from an old television. Their relatives and neighbors subscribed to help them with their miserable condition; however, the amount of money is negligible.

The external genital malformation has made Phuoc to feel pain while urinating. Besides, the thalassemi requires Phuoc to have blood transfusion every two months, costing around VND2 million per time.

Phuoc’s family wishes to receive supports from organizations and individuals in order to help Phuoc to have treatment for the external genital malformation and prolong his life. All the supports can be sent to Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram (01669511492) or the charity box of Khanh Hoa Newspaper at 77 Yersin St., Nha Trang City.
